About this venue
The Augsburger Puppenkiste is a marionette theatre in the historic Heilig-Geist-Spital in Augsburg's old town. It has staged fairy tales and serious plays since 1948. Its television productions from 1953 onwards, including Jim Knopf and Urmel aus dem Eis, made it one of the best-known stages in Germany.
The repertoire includes long-running children's pieces such as Der Räuber Hotzenplotz and Die kleine Hexe, and classic fairy tales. For adults it has staged Der kleine Prinz, Brecht's Dreigroschenoper, Dürrenmatt and Mozart-based operas, and in 2018 a two-hour version of Wagner's Ring. A new cabaret programme premieres every New Year's Eve and runs for about 100 performances over the following six months. The puppet theatre museum Die Kiste is part of the house.
