About this venue

The Alte Aula is the main ceremonial hall of the University of Heidelberg, in the Baroque Old University building (1712–1735) in the heart of the Altstadt. Its present form follows plans by Josef Durm for the university's 500th anniversary in 1886, in Neo-Renaissance style, with portraits and busts honouring the university's founders, patrons and leading scholars up to the 19th century. The university uses it mainly for academic ceremonies, but it is also a place for concerts, lectures and similar occasions, and it is one of the main venues of the Heidelberger Frühling festival for chamber music and art song. The hall takes events of up to 320 people; the gallery cannot be used, and food and drink are not allowed. Hire includes a lectern with microphone and light, projector and screen and two hand microphones, and the hall's concert grand piano can be hired. Access is by a ramp at the main entrance and a lift to the first-floor hall.
