About this venue
Koengen is Bergen's largest outdoor concert arena, set on the grounds of Bergenhus Fortress – one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications, dating back to the 1240s. The flat grass field is enclosed by medieval stone walls, with the roughly 760-year-old Håkonshallen (Haakon's Hall) and Rosenkrantz Tower as a dramatic backdrop and fjord views beyond. The site takes its name from its former use as pastureland ("Koengen" translates roughly to "the cow field") before Bergen Live established it as a permanent open-air concert venue in the 2000s. It now hosts a summer season of major festivals and touring international acts, with past performances by the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Rihanna, among others. The fortress is a protected national heritage property managed by Forsvarsbygg, with Bergen Live as the primary concert promoter and production company on site.
