About this venue
The Betriebswerk Heidelberg is the former railway depot at Am Bahnbetriebswerk 5, built in 1927 as one of the most modern railway works of its time, with a locomotive shed about 136 m long; parts of the site are listed. In 2017 the former locomotive workshop and the adjoining metal shop were converted, first as temporary quarters for the Tankturm event venue and the KlangForum Heidelberg, and since 2022 the complex has been developed into a culture and business centre with cafés, workspaces and studios.
Its club, UGZWO, occupies the former boiler room in the basement, with exposed concrete walls and subdued light. It hosts regular concerts, DJ sets and cultural events, opening for selected events, and can be hired for private or cultural events; recent and upcoming concerts include the pop singer-songwriter BÄR and the jazz acts Liberdjango and the Zipflo Reinhardt Ensemble. The courtyard, foyer and further spaces have been available for events since 2024, booked through the Tankturm events team.
