Beyond Vinyl
Independent record shop in Benwell that stages Beyond Sessions, a monthly programme of intimate live performances filmed and recorded among the racks.
About this venue
Beyond Vinyl is an independent record shop founded in 2017 by David McGovern, which opened its first city-centre store on Westgate Road in March 2018 and now trades from the John Marley Centre on Muscott Grove in Benwell, west Newcastle. It deals across vinyl, CD and cassette with a leaning towards hip-hop, soul, pop and soundtracks.
The shop doubles as a venue through Beyond Sessions, a live platform run with Beyond Studios and Beyond Records. Sessions are played completely live in front of a small ticketed audience surrounded by the racks, professionally filmed, mixed and mastered, and released on YouTube, streaming and limited-edition vinyl. The programme runs to monthly nights for emerging artists, "Introducing" recordings for unsigned acts, and occasional one-off shows with established touring musicians.
