About this venue
Biskopshavn kirke is the parish church of Biskopshavn menighet, in the Biskopshavn neighbourhood of Bergen. The congregation was split off from Sandviken menighet by royal decree on 21 June 1957; after an architectural competition won by Jakob Myklebust, Bjørn Simonnæs and Helge Borgen, the foundation stone was laid on 21 November 1965 and the church was consecrated on 4 December 1966. Built in a coastal "naustkirke" (boathouse church) style inspired by traditional boat sheds, the building combines concrete, brick and timber under a pitched roof carried on laminated wooden beams and concrete pillars, with a free-standing bell tower to the west. Large gable windows and roof-line light slots bring in natural light, and the east window is a cast-concrete glass artwork of an open cross within a circle, symbolising the resurrection.The church seats around 500, extendable via the adjoining Great Hall, and houses a 21-stop pipe organ on a gallery above the entrance. Alongside regular services, weddings, funerals and baptisms, it hosts an active choir programme and regular concerts and musical performances throughout the year.
