About this venue

The Burnley Mechanics is a theatre and former Mechanics' Institute in the market town of Burnley, Lancashire, England. Designed by architect James Green of Todmorden and built 1854-55, the building served an educational purpose until the original Mechanics Institute closed in 1959; Burnley Council bought it in the early 1960s and it saw a mixed run as concert hall, ballroom and bingo club before closing for refurbishment in 1979. It reopened as the town's theatre in 1986, opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II, and Historic England has designated it a Grade II* listed building. The theatre now runs a year-round programme of comedy, live music, family shows and festive productions, with a first-floor auditorium, ground-floor box office, Mechanics Bistro for pre-theatre dining, and Theatre and Lounge bars.
