About this venue
CAT, short for Communication of Arts and Technology, was founded on 13 March 1988 to make affordable culture possible for everyone. It is run entirely by volunteers with no paid staff, as a department of the student association UStA e.V., alongside its partner clubs Jazzkeller Sauschdall and the Studentencafé. Its stated aim is to promote and give space to Ulm's alternative culture; its programme includes concerts, club nights, conventions and workshops, and its rooms are not available for hire.
The club sits in the Courtine am Gaisenberg (Werk XX), part of Ulm's 19th-century federal fortress, built between 1843 and 1858 to protect the railway approach. Larger parties run on two floors with two dancefloors. Regular formats include the "Reptile House and Twilight Zone" dark wave, gothic and post-punk nights, "Nacht und Nebel", and the "CATacombs Of Metal" concerts with black and death metal bands, run with Nekro:concerts.
