About this venue
The Citizens Theatre is a producing theatre at 119 Gorbals Street in Glasgow, working in a building that has staged plays since 1878. It closed in 2018 for the first comprehensive redevelopment in its history and reopened on 23 August 2025 with a Homecoming Festival, having preserved the original Victorian auditorium while adding a light-filled foyer, new social spaces and step-free access throughout. It is currently open and trading, with a live forward programme.
Productions are staged in the Main Theatre, whose Victorian auditorium is widely reported (Wikipedia, press) at around 650 seats; no primary citz.co.uk seating plan was found to confirm this, so the figure is not recorded as a formal space capacity.
