About this venue
Den Norske Opera & Ballett occupies the opera house on Kirsten Flagstads plass in Bjørvika, on the Oslo waterfront — the building whose sloping white roof the public can walk up. It is the national stage for opera and ballet and opened in 2008.
Hovedscenen, the main auditorium, seats up to 1,364 and works from a stage floor of 16 by 16 metres. Scene 2 is a black box holding roughly 400 depending on how it is laid out, deliberately adaptable for anything from intimate concerts to experimental new theatre and dance. A third, smaller stage completes the house.
The programme runs from the standard opera and ballet repertoire through to new work — recent stagings include The Turn of the Screw and Hedda Gabler.
