About this venue

Dramatikkens hus — the Norwegian Centre for New Playwriting — occupies the old, listed buildings of Oslo Elektriske Sveiseverksted in Tøyenbekken at Grønland in Oslo. It is the national development and resource centre for new dramatic writing, established as the successor to Det Åpne Teater, which ran from 1986 to 2009. Hallen is the performance space, seating 165, and carries the theatre's public programme: work-in-progress showings, readings and performances of new writing. Prøvesalen is the rehearsal room alongside it, used for development work and for the arbeidsvisning presentations through which new plays are shown to an audience for the first time. The house works as a development arena rather than a repertory theatre: writers, directors and performers use it to test material before it goes anywhere else.
