About this venue

Emanuel Vigeland built this house in Grimelundsveien at Slemdal in 1926 to hold his sculptures and paintings, and later decided it should also be his burial chamber. Following Italian models he named it Tomba Emmanuelle. The main room is a dark barrel vault covered from floor to ceiling in fresco. The painting, Vita, runs to 800 m² and works through human life from conception to death in a sequence of dramatic scenes. The artist was the younger brother of Gustav Vigeland. For musicians the room's draw is its acoustics: reverberation of around twenty seconds, closer to a cathedral than a concert hall, and the museum is regularly hired out for concerts on that basis. Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster.
