About this venue
Fredrikstad domkirke's cornerstone was laid in the summer of 1878 and the church was consecrated on 13 October 1880, originally as Vestre Fredrikstad kirke before adopting its current name in 1969. Designed by architects Waldemar and J.F. Lühr and built in unplastered red brick in neo-Gothic style, the long church measures 60 by 26 metres with a 72-metre western tower spire; a major restoration took place from 1950-1954 under architect Arnstein Arneberg. Its stained glass windows, depicting angels and the parable of the prodigal son, were installed in 1917 by Emanuel Vigeland, and it holds three bells cast in 1880. The main organ, built in 1963-1964 by the Danish firm Marcussen & Søn, has 54 stops across four manuals and pedal and was among Norway's largest organs at the time of installation; a smaller choir organ by Ryde og Berg was added in 2002. The cathedral seats 790 and hosts regular choir and concert programming alongside its parish services.
