Fruitmarket
Free public contemporary art space on Market Street, with white-box galleries, a double-height former fruit warehouse used for events and gigs, a bookshop and a cafe.
About this venue
Fruitmarket is a contemporary art space at 45 Market Street, between Waverley station and the Royal Mile, in a 1938 building that began life as a fruit and vegetable market and has shown art since 1974. Admission is free.
A major redevelopment completed in 2021 brought the adjoining original fruit warehouse at 36-39 Market Street, latterly a nightclub, into the building, and the organisation dropped "Gallery" from its name at the same time. The result is a set of pristine white-box galleries plus the Warehouse, a double-height industrial hall used for performance, live music, talks and club nights as well as exhibitions.
The galleries and the Warehouse are both available for private hire, by day or evening, optionally with a tour of the current exhibition. There is also a bookshop and a cafe on site.
