About this venue

The Gewandhaus zu Leipzig is the city's principal concert hall and home of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. The present building, the third Gewandhaus, opened on 8 October 1981 on what is now Augustusplatz, after four years of construction. Earlier Gewandhaus concert halls go back to 1781. The building has two halls: the Großer Saal, with about 1,900 seats, and the smaller Mendelssohn-Saal, with about 500 seats, which took that name after a renovation in 1997. The house puts on around 700 events a season, about 70 of them Gewandhaus Orchestra concerts.
