About this venue
The Goldener Saal is the great hall of Augsburg's town hall, built by Elias Holl in 1615 to 1620 and completed in 1643. Destroyed in the air raid of February 1944, it was faithfully reconstructed between 1980 and 1996 for about EUR 9 million. It reopened to visitors for the city's 2000th anniversary in 1985. The hall is 32.5 metres long, 17.5 metres wide and 14 metres high (552 square metres), with 5-metre portals, 2.6 kg of gold leaf, wall paintings of emperors and an allegorical painted ceiling.
The town hall's state rooms are still used for official receptions, concerts, honours and award ceremonies, weddings and the Augsburger Engelesspiel. The city lets the Goldener Saal, the Oberer Fletz and the Fürstenzimmer for events in the public interest. The town hall was closed from August 2024 to September 2026 for asbestos removal and fire-safety work and has since reopened. Visitors can see the hall daily from 10am to 6pm with tickets from Regio Augsburg Tourismus. It is certified under Reisen für Alle as step-free for people with limited mobility and partly accessible for wheelchair users.
The hall is separate from the Kleiner Goldener Saal at Jesuitengasse 12, a different building.
