About this venue
Greyfriars Church traces to a Franciscan friary founded in Reading in 1233; the present building on Friar Street was completed by 1311. After the friars' expulsion in 1538 the building served the town as a guildhall, prison and poor house before being restored as a Church of England church in 1863. It is believed to be the best-preserved English Franciscan church still in use for worship, and gained a public book and coffee shop at its west end in 2021.
