About this venue
Håkonshallen stands inside Bergenhus fortress by Bryggen in Bergen. King Håkon Håkonsson had it built between 1247 and 1261 as a royal banqueting and ceremonial hall, and it remains the largest secular medieval building in Norway.
It is run by Bymuseet i Bergen and open daily as a museum, with guided tours through its three floors and models showing the building as it stood around 1300. As a listed national monument it is still in use for royal dinners and other official occasions.
For music it matters most as a Festspillene i Bergen venue. The upper festival hall takes 300 to 450 for seated concerts, and the festival programmes everything there from chamber music and the classical repertoire to contemporary and experimental work; the room suits vocal ensembles, string concerts, smaller orchestras and solo artists.
