About this venue
The Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden was commissioned and financed by Kaiser Wilhelm II, built in neo-Baroque style by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, and opened on 16 October 1894; the ornate foyer extension by Felix Genzmer followed in 1902, and the auditorium of the Großes Haus was restored to its original state in 1975-78. As a five-division house it brings together music theatre, drama, dance, concerts by the Hessisches Staatsorchester and the Junges Staatstheater (JUST), with more than 50 productions a season plus guest performances, readings and talks. All stages can play at once, so some days see up to five performances. Besides the Großes Haus (1,041 seats) it has the Kleines Haus (272), the Studio (89) and the off-site Wartburg stage (154) on Schwalbacher Straße. The theatre also runs the Internationale Maifestspiele. Wheelchair places are available in the Großes Haus, Kleines Haus, Studio and foyer; the Wartburg is reached by stairs and is not yet step-free. Paid parking is close to all venues.
