About this venue

Opened on 2 September 1899 as Owlerton Stadium (renamed Hillsborough in 1914), this all-seater stadium in the Owlerton suburb has been home to Sheffield Wednesday FC throughout its history. It hosted matches at the 1966 World Cup and UEFA Euro 1996, and set its record attendance of 72,841 for an FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City in 1934. The ground was also the site of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died — a tragedy that led directly to all-seater stadiums becoming standard across English football. Today it holds around 39,700 (currently reduced for safety works), and its function rooms and suites are available for conference and event hire on non-matchdays.
