About this venue

Høvleriet stands on Strandgata on the Haugesund waterfront, in a building put up as a herring saltery in 1897 and extended with a brick planing mill — the høvleri that gives it its name — in 1917. It has been converted into a cultural and event house that keeps the industrial character rather than covering it up. Capacity depends on how the building is used: the house takes up to 650 seated and 1,600 standing, with 600 seated distributed across Høvleriet itself, the Bodega and the Garasjebryggeriet, and a legal capacity of 1,000 for the whole building in a mingle and concert-bar setup. It hosts concerts, performances, festivals and events of every kind, and runs several of its own: the Vise- og lyrikkfestivalen, the Haugaland Prog and Rock festival and Haugesund Ølfestival. There is a brewery and distillery on site.
