About this venue
Since 2000 the stage in the vaulted cellar (Ratskeller) of the Rathaus St. Johann has been one of the few permanent houses for puppet and figure theatre in Germany. Run by the city of Saarbrücken, it hosts guest companies from across the country and also presents chamber plays and small concerts. The programme covers traditional puppet theatre, marionettes, shadow play, acting with figures and material theatre, with a strong emphasis on performances for children of different ages as well as productions for young people and adults.
Saturday evenings bring contemporary figure theatre for adults, and Sunday afternoons are family performances. The season usually runs from October to December and from February to May, with a summer break from June to September and a winter break in January. The entrance is on Betzenstraße, under the arcades. The theatre box office opens one hour before each performance; reservations are taken online, by email or by phone through the Theater im Viertel.
