About this venue
Kulturhaus abraxas has been run by the City of Augsburg's Kulturamt since 1995. It occupies the former officers' mess of the Somme barracks, built in 1936 and later used by the US Army as part of the Reese Barracks. The building has been a listed monument since 2006. The house offers theatre for children and adults, dance, readings, live music and changing exhibitions, and is supported by Stadtsparkasse Augsburg. The abraxas Theater is a stage for live music from chamber music through jazz to rock. It is one of the main stages of Augsburg's independent dance scene and the city's centre for children's and youth theatre, with regular visits from ensembles such as Junges Theater Augsburg and Schaubühne Augsburg. Exhibitions are shown in the foyer, known as the Ballettsaal. The annual lab.30 media art festival takes place here.
The theatre hall can be hired by individuals, associations and companies for their own cultural events. A house technician must be booked, and tickets are sold through Reservix. The seating rises in tiers, and one marked wheelchair space is at the end of row 1. The abraxas Gastronomie am Westpark is open Wednesday to Sunday. Parking is limited.
