About this venue
The Kulturhaus Mikado is run entirely by volunteers of the non-profit Kulturhaus Mikado e.V., founded in 1998 by members of the tenants' cooperative MiKa (MieterInneninitiative Karlsruhe), from which it takes its name. Since 1 January 2003 it has occupied rooms in a former American barracks building on Kanalweg in the Nordstadt, which it shares with the Amerikanische Bibliothek and the restaurant fünf with its beer garden.
On its small stage for newcomers and seasoned performers it stages more than 50 events a year, mostly at weekends: concerts (folk, singer-songwriters, classical, rock, pop and more), readings, talks, theatre including children's theatre, film screenings and art exhibitions, plus courses, a children's choir and community events. A bar serves drinks including organic wines. The house has a ramp, a lift and an accessible toilet; tickets are sold through Eventim and at the door, which opens 30 minutes before each event.
