About this venue
Menstad bydelshus is one of the two neighbourhood houses run by Skien municipality under the name Bydelshusene i Skien, a meeting place for people of all ages. Its programme runs to concerts, the Fredagsuniversitetet midday lecture series, local history evenings, a neighbourhood quiz, a data café, health talks, outdoor cinema and choir cafés, alongside courses, clubs and workshops in languages, games, bridge, reading and crafts. Users of the workshops pay a small subscription each half-year towards the running of the rooms.
The house has a stage with technical equipment, a café that takes 80 for confirmations, christenings and other functions, and meeting rooms of various sizes for up to 40. It holds a licence to serve alcohol, so guests may not bring their own to a hire. The kitchen has its own chef and serves a weekday menu.
The building is step-free, with one accessible toilet, wheelchair spaces, good signage and hearing loops in the café, the Gunnar Knudsen room and the computer room. Note that the course kitchen on the first floor is reached by stairs only, with no lift. There are 70 free parking spaces on the site and two accessible spaces at the main entrance; bus line M1 stops at Menstadbrua, 400 metres away uphill, and line P5 at Haugsåsen, 200 metres away on the flat. Bydelshusene accept the Norwegian companion card at all their events.
Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 11:00–18:00 and Friday 11:00–15:00.
