About this venue
Molde domkirke stands at Kirkebakken 2 in Molde and is the fourth church on the site. Its predecessor, a wooden church of 1887, was destroyed in the German bombing of Molde in 1940, though some of its art was saved. The present building went up between 1953 and 1957 to a competition-winning design by Finn Bryn — a two-aisled basilica in reinforced concrete, modernist with a strain of Jugendstil, 65 metres long and 25 metres high. It was consecrated on 8 December 1957 and became the cathedral of Møre diocese in 1983.
The room seats 900, which makes it one of the largest indoor spaces in the region and a natural concert venue. The organ was built by Rieger Orgelbau of Germany and installed in 1999, with 50 stops over three manuals and pedal; it was first played on Christmas Day that year. The free-standing bell tower is 50 metres tall and carries an electronically operated carillon of 26 bells.
