About this venue

Newport Cathedral of St Woolos is a Grade I listed church on Stow Hill dating in part to the 9th century, with a Norman nave added around 1080 and a tower added after 1402. It became the pro-cathedral of the new Diocese of Monmouth in 1929 and a full cathedral in 1949. Alongside a regular pattern of worship and a strong musical tradition (a full men and boys' choir, a girls' choir and a resident orchestra), the cathedral and its hall are hired out for concerts, recitals, lectures, conferences and art exhibitions, with chairs removable to reconfigure the space and a piano and organ available.
