About this venue

The Opernhaus Nürnberg opened on 1 September 1905 as the Neues Stadttheater, designed by the architect Heinrich Seeling, and is the most prominent building of the Staatstheater Nürnberg, a multi-genre state theatre presenting opera, drama, ballet and concerts. Its U-shaped auditorium seats 1,031 and sits opposite the Schauspielhaus on Richard-Wagner-Platz, next to the Opernhaus underground station (U2, U21, U3). The city plans to extend and refurbish the opera house; during that work the opera and dance companies are to perform in a new interim venue being built in the courtyard of the Kongresshalle. No closure date was published at the time of writing, and the 2026/27 season is programmed in the Opernhaus. A lift on the left side of the building serves the stalls and first tier, there are wheelchair places in the stalls and an accessible toilet, and an induction loop is installed.
