Pendle Hippodrome Theatre
Volunteer-run charity theatre in Colne, opened in 1914 as a cine-variety house and restored by local operatic societies in the 1980s; stages musicals, plays, pantomime, dance and stand-up.
About this venue
Pendle Hippodrome Theatre opened on 21 September 1914 on New Market Street, Colne, as a cine-variety theatre built by local man George Fort using stone from the old quarry. It later became a cinema, then a bingo hall from 1964, and closed in 1965. In 1978 it was bought by three local operatic societies and restored over eight years and more than £130,000 of volunteer work, reopening on 6 December 1986.
The theatre is now run entirely by volunteers as a limited company and registered charity, home to the Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company and Youth Theatre. It stages full-scale musicals, plays, pantomime, dance showcases and stand-up comedy for local performers, schools and drama groups.
