Plassen

Plassen is the culture house of Molde, a joint project between Moldejazz, Teatret Vårt, Molde bibliotek, Bjørnsonfestivalen and Møre og Romsdal Kunstsenter, officially opened on 14 July 2012. It was designed by the Danish architects 3XN and built for flexibility, with rooms that adapt from intimate evenings to larger audience events. Teatret Vårt, the regional theatre for Møre og Romsdal, has its stages and offices in the building and programmes a full season there — recent and forthcoming productions include Fanny og Alexander, Pinocchio, Apestjernen, Husjomfru and Tidevann. The theatre reported close to 35,000 visitors in 2025. Plassen is also a fixed venue on Riksteatret's national touring circuit, with Triggersystemet (September 2026), Apestjernen (October 2026) and 1984 dub (April 2027) booked in. Storyville Jazz Club runs its own concert series on the Storyville Scene on the fourth floor, and jazz cafés in Kafé Kurt on the ground floor; Moldejazz, the international jazz festival, uses the house during its July week. The library, the regional art centre and Bjørnsonfestivalen — Norway's international festival of literature and freedom of expression — complete the tenants. Kafé Kurt, run by Teatret Vårt, is the building's social centre and is itself used for events. The box office is on the first floor, open Tuesday to Friday 15:30-17:30 and from an hour before each performance; tickets are also sold online through Teatret Vårt.
