About this venue

The Reduit was built in 1830-32 by the Austrian engineer General Franz Scholl to strengthen the Kastel fortifications and serve as barracks for the Kastel bridgehead: a horseshoe-shaped, two-storey fort with a free-standing central building on the Rhine side, standing on 1,800 oak piles on the riverbank. Badly damaged in the Second World War, it has housed Kastel clubs since the 1960s and today is home to the Museum Castellum local history museum and a youth centre. In summer its inner courtyard is used for open-air cinema, concerts and similar events, including the Riverside Stomp ska and reggae open air run by Kultur in der Reduit e.V., which reached its 20th edition in August 2026, and a children's festival.
