About this venue

The Großes Haus at Schillerplatz 1 is the main stage of the Saarländisches Staatstheater, a multi-genre theatre that stages opera, drama, ballet and orchestral concerts. The building was constructed in 1937–1938 to plans by Paul Baumgarten, opened on 9 October 1938 and reopened after the war in 1946. Its horseshoe-shaped auditorium has stalls and two balconies and seats 875 after rebuilding (originally 1,132). The company also plays at the Alte Feuerwache, sparte4 and the Congresshalle, which are listed separately. The box office is at Schillerplatz 2. Wheelchair users reach the level stalls, cloakrooms, bar and accessible toilets via a lifting platform at the rear (Saar side) with staff assistance; ten wheelchair spaces are available in the stalls. The two balconies are reached only by stairs, as the listed building has no lift. Parking is in the Q-Park Am Staatstheater car park.
