About this venue

Staatstheater Augsburg is the city's public theatre, offering musical theatre, drama and ballet with its own choir and the Augsburg Philharmonic orchestra. It was called Städtische Bühnen Augsburg until 1999 and Theater Augsburg until August 2018, when it became a state theatre run by a foundation of the City of Augsburg and the Free State of Bavaria. Its home, the Großes Haus at Kennedy-Platz 1, opened in 1877 with Beethoven's Fidelio and was rebuilt after wartime destruction, reopening in 1956. It closed in June 2016 over fire-safety defects and is undergoing a general refurbishment, with a new Kleines Haus and workshop building being added. The theatre expects the works to finish in 2029/30. Before closure the auditorium held about 950. Until the reopening, performances take place at the interim venues martini-Park (Provinostraße 52), the brechtbühne and Kühlergebäude in the Gaswerk (Am Alten Gaswerk 8), Kongress am Park (Gögginger Straße 10) and mephisto (Karolinenstraße 21).
