About this venue
The Staatstheater Mainz is the city's main public theatre, a multi-genre house presenting opera with concerts, dance and drama, plus programmes for children and young people. The theatre building on Gutenbergplatz was built between 1829 and 1833; the Großes Haus, which holds around 1,000 spectators, was fully renovated between 1998 and 2001. A second stage, the Kleines Haus with about 400 seats, opened in 1997 directly behind the Großes Haus, and since the 2012/2013 season a glass-domed studio stage on the roof of the Großes Haus, the Glashaus, seats 90 or 190. The studio stage U17 completes the set of venues. The 2026-27 season includes opera productions such as Wagner's Lohengrin and Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos.
