Tankturm

The TANKTURM was built at the end of the 1920s as a railway water tower in robust concrete with brick façades; until the 1970s it supplied steam locomotives with water, storing 333 cubic metres in the tower, while its side wings served as training rooms and workshops. Today the tower and its western wing house the architecture practice AA g Architekten and the KlangForum Heidelberg, and are used as an event centre and a place for art and culture; the venue marked ten years in 2025. The hireable rooms include the Tank, the ten-metre-high former water cylinder with a fireplace and balcony; the Kuppelsaal beneath the former tank floor, reached by spiral stairs or lift; the Kathedrale, with a gallery and 5.5 m ceiling; the Saal 100, the largest room, used for conferences and concerts; the Ladestation, a former iron store opening onto a terrace; and a glass-roofed Werkstatthalle of 180 sq m for receptions and gala dinners. The cultural programme includes concerts, exhibitions, talks and the annual TANKTURMFEST. The same team also lets rooms in the nearby Betriebswerk.
