About this venue
The Eric Morecambe Centre opened in September 2021 on the site of Harpenden's former sports centre in Rothamsted Park, replacing the town's ageing Public Halls on Southdown Road. It is named after the comedian, who lived in Harpenden, and is run by Everyone Theatres, part of Everyone Active, for St Albans City and District Council.
The theatre seats 511, or holds 900 standing, and is equipped to take major touring productions as well as local groups. The programme covers comedy, drama, dance, variety, tribute and rock concerts, spoken word and "an audience with" evenings, a regular film programme, school concerts and an annual Christmas pantomime.
The building also has exhibition space, meeting rooms, a theatre bar and a cafe, and houses the Harpenden Museum run by the Harpenden and District Local History Society. Two function rooms, one overlooking Rothamsted Park, are let for weddings, birthdays, charity and corporate events, and the main theatre can also be hired.
