About this venue
The Middlesbrough Empire opened in 1897 as a music hall and is one of the oldest entertainment venues in the North East. It keeps its proscenium arch stage and original features, and today runs as a live music and performance venue and nightclub across three floors. Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Harry Houdini played here in its variety days; more recently it has hosted Arctic Monkeys and James Arthur. It is a member of the Music Venue Trust and the official venue of Teesside University.
The programme mixes touring gigs, including album-launch shows, with tribute acts, day parties and weekly club nights. The main hall has high ceilings, a stage, balconies and VIP boxes, and two further floors hold five rooms of varying size. Skiddle lists overall capacity at 1,200.
The whole venue can be hired exclusively, with AV and technical equipment, DJ and the club light show available; the venue quotes hire from £1,000 and an event manager handles bookings. There is a car park behind the venue (about 60 spaces, free after 5pm), and Middlesbrough station is about five minutes' walk.
