About this venue

Founded in 1641, Theater Ulm describes itself as the oldest municipal theatre in Germany. It runs its own ensembles for opera and operetta, drama and ballet, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm (Philharmonisches Orchester der Stadt Ulm) belongs to the house and gives its own symphony concerts. Herbert von Karajan held his first post here as conductor from 1929 to 1934, which gives the square its name. The present building on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz was built from 1966 to 1969 to designs by the architect Fritz Schäfer and opened on 3 October 1969. The Grosses Haus (main auditorium) has 815 seats. The Podium, a hexagonal studio theatre in the basement with 18 movable floor sections, seats up to 200 and allows the audience to sit around the stage. The Junges Forum produces work for children and young people, and the Podium.Bar hosts late-night formats.
