About this venue
Theater und Orchester Heidelberg is the city's multi-genre public theatre. The house on Theaterstraße opened in 1853; after closure in 2006 for structural damage it was rebuilt and extended from 2009 to 2012, adding the Marguerre-Saal as the main auditorium, and reopened on 24 November 2012. The historic auditorium, the Alter Saal, remains in use, alongside the Chorsaal and the studio stage Friedrich 5 (entrance via Friedrichstraße 5).
The programme spans opera and musical theatre, drama, dance, the Junges Theater for young audiences and concerts by the Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg, which play mainly in the Konzerthaus Stadthalle. The company also runs the Zwinger stages on Zwingerstraße and festivals including the Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele, the Heidelberger Stückemarkt and the Tanzbiennale Heidelberg.
Access: the Marguerre-Saal has five and the Alter Saal six wheelchair spaces in the stalls; cloakrooms and toilets are step-free; both halls have inductive hearing systems; selected performances are relaxed, audio-described or interpreted into German Sign Language; assistance dogs are welcome. A limited number of disabled parking spaces are on Theaterplatz.
