Tromsø domkirke

Tromsø domkirke is the world's northernmost Protestant cathedral and the only one in Norway built of wood — an 1861 neo-Gothic timber church in Kirkeparken at the centre of Tromsø, seating around 600.

About this venue

Tromsø domkirke stands in Kirkeparken in the middle of Tromsø, on ground that served as a burial place from the Middle Ages until the first half of the nineteenth century; a few of the older graves can still be seen on the north-east side. It is Norway's only Protestant cathedral built in wood, and the northernmost in the world. Christian Heinrich Grosch drew the neo-Gothic building and D. G. Evjen built it from timber floated down from Målselv. Bishop Essendrop consecrated it on 1 December 1861, before it was finished: the tower followed in 1862, the organ in 1863, the bells in 1864 and Christen Brun's altarpiece — a copy of Adolph Tidemand's "The Resurrection" — in 1884. The chancel windows are by Per Vigeland and were installed in 1961, and a 1634 edition of Christian IV's Bible lies on the altar. The main organ's case was built in 1863 by Claus Jensen of Trondheim with an 1876 console by J. H. Jörgensen in Oslo; it was rebuilt in 1959 and restored to its original form in 2013–14. A second, chancel organ by Mühleisen was added in 2017, and the two can be played together from either console. The cathedral is a listed building, holds a Kirkebyggdatabasen-approved capacity of 618, and is used for concerts, film evenings and other events alongside services. It is open to visitors through the summer.
