About this venue
Byscenen occupies a building on Kongens gate that has been a gathering place in Trondheim since 1878, when it opened as the Arbeiderforeningen — the workers' association. Ole Bull played there in its first year, and in 1882 Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson lectured to an audience of more than 1,500. Over the following century it housed bazaars, boxing matches, a dancing school, theatre productions, public meetings and, above all, concerts. It reopened in spring 2010 after a full modernisation as a state-of-the-art stage, and is now billed as Mid-Norway's main room for live music.
Storesal, the main hall, holds 750 standing, 420 seated or 230 at tables, with roughly 300 m² of floor and a further 125 m² in the gallery, and a large stage with permanently installed sound and lighting. Byscenen Anneks, which carries the GramArt scenen name, is the smaller room at around 150. Lillesal sits behind the main hall and is generally used for buffets and food preparation, and the foyer adds about 160 m² of mingling space with its own bar.
The building also holds Alma's, the venue's bar and kitchen, which seats up to 100 for dinner and doubles as an event space, and Boxer, a rock bar in the cellar beneath Alma's with two shuffleboards, quiz nights and its own live music, hireable for private events outside opening hours.
Programming runs year-round from large touring concerts to club shows, and takes in stand-up, live podcasts, award ceremonies and corporate events. The venue is a regular arena for Trondheim Jazzfest and the Trondheim Calling showcase festival.
