About this venue

Moving pictures were first shown in Egersund in 1902, and the town got its first purpose-built cinema at Strandgaten 63 in 1910. After municipal takeover of Folkets Hus (Festiviteten) in 1924, the town ran "Egersund Kommunale Kinematograf" through fire damage in 1941 and post-war decline. A new cinema designed by architect Thv. Solheim opened on 21 February 1959 with seating for 380 in soft chairs and a 9-metre screen for Cinemascope. A major 1993-94 renovation added a second, smaller theatre and created today's Egersund kulturhus, which was fitted with digital projection in 2010. The venue today combines regular film screenings with a cultural programme of comedy, theatre and other live events.
