Kristiansten festning

Kristiansten festning stands on the ridge above central Trondheim, a former military installation now owned by the state through Forsvarsbygg and run in cooperation with Trondheim municipality and local associations. It is a listed monument and one of the city's most-used outdoor spaces — a viewpoint and recreation area by day, and a large arena for concerts, food festivals, markets and sporting events. Festningsparken is the main arena and takes around 15,000 people. It falls into three parts: Småbergan, the rocky, uneven ground; Paradeplassen, a flat asphalt surface roughly 45 x 40 m that suits a stage; and Festningssletta, also fairly level. Separately, the Place d'Armes is a gravel space about 80 x 40 m holding some 5,000. When Trondheim's executive committee opened the fortress as a concert arena on trial in 2014 and 2015, the permitted figure ran as high as 22,000. Power for events is taken from a transformer in the basement of the gymnasium building. Because the site is protected and residential areas are close, environmental health authorities must be notified for anything loud, and outdoor hire runs through the municipality's byrom office at byrom@midtbyen.no. Indoors, Forsvarsbygg lets premises in the commandant's house and the Haubitzmagasinet; the latter has been used for weddings, confirmations, kick-offs and concerts. The indoor event spaces are managed separately from the outdoor arena. There is also a café on the fortress.
