Kultursenteret ISAK

Trondheim municipality's youth culture centre at Prinsens gate 44, for 16-25 year olds. The Amfisalen seats 168 and the Coffee Annan club stage takes about 150 standing; the house also holds five recording studios, band rooms, dance studios, galleries, a media studio and a café, and lends its rooms free to young people.

About this venue

Kultursenteret ISAK occupies an old wharf building joined to a town house at Prinsens gate 44 in Trondheim, and is a department of Trondheim municipality's culture unit. Its main audience is young people aged 16 to 25, and most of what happens here is organised by them — daily activity across dance, art, music, theatre, media and event production, courses and workshops, and public performances. All ISAK's own activity is free, the house is alcohol-free, and the café has extra-low prices for under-25s with no obligation to buy. The building traces back to Allaktivitetshuset Kanalen, which opened as a youth cultural centre in 1993 and merged with Internasjonalt Senter in 1995; the initials are now read as "I Sentrum for Aktiv Kultur". ISAK became part of the newly created Kulturenheten in 2005. Jan Eirik Evjen's 1993 sculpture "En hyllest til Espen Askeladd", made from old wharf timber, stands outside the main entrance. Amfisalen is the main room, seating 148 in the amphitheatre plus 20 in the gallery, and is let for concerts, pre-productions, performances, meetings and conferences, theatre rehearsals and dance; both the auditorium and the stage are wheelchair accessible. Coffee Annan scene is a club stage off the café taking around 150 standing, which can also be laid out with café tables in the stage area. Other rooms include Ullmannsalen and Klubben as flexible theatre and dance rooms, the Øvesal and Lille Øvesal dance studios with mirrors and barres, ISAK Nye, the Skaperloftet art and design workshop, five recording studios, an ISAK Media film and photo studio, three band rooms plus a band container, galleries in the foyers, and meeting rooms — Kanalrommet for 30, Kulturfabrikken for 25, Rommania for 16 and Grupperommet for 15. Young people in the target group borrow rooms free for non-commercial cultural activity, with fixed band-room rehearsal slots the exception. Others may hire when there is spare capacity, at published rates with 50% off for students and youth organisations and 10% off for bookings over ten weeks or days. Hire runs during opening hours, Monday to Friday 09:00-21:30, with weekend events for young people by arrangement. Because the house is two old buildings, only parts of it are wheelchair accessible.
