Lade kirke

Lade kirke stands on Lade in Trondheim, on ground that is thought to have held an ancient royal seat and that had already carried at least one stone church and a stave church before it. The present stone building went up around 1190 — the parish gives 1189 — as a Romanesque long church dedicated to the Holy Cross, with a straight-ended chancel, a decorated soapstone portal and a Romanesque window in the east wall of the choir. The walls were substantially rebuilt in the 1690s, and the year 1694 is still cut into the south wall; the octagonal roof ridge was added around 1800, with further work in 1780, 1948 and 1963. The room seats 140. The pulpit of 1649 was carved by Jens Snekker and painted by Johan Contrafeier; the altarpiece of 1709 is by Lars Pedersen Bilthugger and Peter Anderssøn Lillie and holds five alabaster friezes from the fifteenth century, repainted in 1945. The font dates from 1961, there are two bells, and the gravestone of the donor Ellen Ravert lies before the altar rail. A churchyard surrounds the building. The parish uses the church for concerts alongside services, and Lade Kantori, the parish choir, sings here. It belongs to Nidaros diocese, under Nidaros domprosti. The church's own street number is not settled: Kartverket's place-name register fixes the building's position but has no address for it, Wikipedia's "Lade allé 36" is not a registered address, and Jarleveien 44 in this listing is the nearest registered one.
