About this venue

Nidarosdomen stands at Bispegata 3 in Trondheim, built over the grave of St Olav and the most central church in Norway — its national shrine. Building began around 1070 and continued to about 1300. The cathedral measures 102 by 50 metres including the transept, with the nave vault 21 metres up, and holds 1,850 people. It has two organs of consequence. The Wagner organ was built by Johann Joachim Wagner in 1738-39, with 30 stops over two manuals and pedal, and was restored and put back in 1994. The Steinmeyer organ of 1930 was built with 127 stops for the 900th anniversary of the battle of Stiklestad, thoroughly rebuilt in 2013-14 and rededicated on 18 May 2014. The cathedral works as a parish church with regular services and as a concert room with a dense programme: five choirs of its own plus visiting artists through the year. It is hired out for ticketed events at 20 per cent of the box office with a minimum fee of 38,000 kroner. It is a consecrated space and a monument protected under the cultural heritage act, and every lighting plan beyond the permanent fixtures has to be approved by Nidaros domkirkes restaureringsarbeider. Next door, Erkebispegården offers three further rooms: Herresalen, the thirteenth-century banqueting hall the house calls Trondheim's foremost representative room; the Hvelvrommene, two intimate thirteenth-century vaulted rooms in the north wing; and Øysteinsalen, a modern hall in the east wing for concerts, seminars, performances and lectures. Catering runs through partner restaurants.
