About this venue

The Academy occupies St Paul's, a Welsh Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1880 to a design by Walter Thomas of Liverpool on Great Darkgate Street in the centre of Aberystwyth. After the chapel closed in the early 1990s it was converted into a pub: booths for eating and drinking now sit on a levelled floor in the former raked gallery, the old pulpit serves as a DJ position, and the organ pipes stand behind the bar in the former schoolroom, added in 1903. The ceiling panels and the texts on the end gallery wall survive. The building was listed as closed long term in 2023 but is trading again under a new food registration rated in July 2026.
