The Mess is a cafe, bar and event space in the officers' mess of Fort Perch Rock, the coastal battery built in 1829 at the mouth of the Mersey in New Brighton. It serves breakfast through to dinner - Italian pizza, paninis, toast and teacakes, the house Scouse and a Titanic stout rarebit - with a well-regarded coffee list and a fully stocked bar of draught beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. There is a wood-burning stove, and the room is dog friendly. It opens Tuesday to Friday 10am to 3pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm.
The programme is regular rather than occasional. Boogie Woogie Sundays run weekly from noon, with live boogie-woogie and jazz piano; through 2026 the fort also hosts a bookable series of Event Nights with Explore New Brighton, pairing live music with local maritime history and a seasonal menu.
The room is hired privately all year - weddings, birthdays, business events and funerals - for 25 to 150 guests in spring and summer and up to 60 in autumn and winter. The bar runs to midnight with optional late licences to 2am, catering is either in-house or brought in, and the venue will book musicians, singers, comedians or magicians on the client's behalf. The operating company is Brotherman Limited.
