About this venue

The Alte Nationalgalerie is a temple-like building raised on a plinth decorated with motifs from antiquity, designed by Friedrich August Stüler, a student of Schinkel, and completed after his death by Johann Heinrich Strack. Its construction followed a bequest in 1861 by the banker Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener, whose collection included works by Caspar David Friedrich and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. After ten years of building it opened on 21 March 1876 as the third museum on the island, and it was heavily damaged in the Second World War. The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin run it, and in 2026 the 150th anniversary of its opening was the focus of the Inselfest on Museum Island. No hire spaces or capacities are published for this building.
