About this venue

The Altes Schauspielhaus on Kleine Königstraße opened on 6 November 1909 after only seven months of construction, on the site of the former Legionskaserne where Friedrich Schiller worked as regimental doctor. It came through the war almost undamaged and is regarded as a gem of Jugendstil architecture, with its characteristic semicircular façade, airy foyer and an auditorium with two balconies. The theatre had its first heyday in the 1920s and 1930s under director Claudius Kraushaar, was later used as a venue of the Staatstheater, and stood derelict for more than two decades after 1962 until its reopening after a thorough renovation in 1984. Together with the Komödie im Marquardt it forms the Schauspielbühnen in Stuttgart, led since August 2018 by Axel Preuß. The repertoire puts classics alongside contemporary plays and elaborate musical productions for a broad audience, with an emphasis on spoken theatre. The 499-seat house has a well-balanced relationship between stage and auditorium, keeping the audience close to the action.
